Panchmukhi Hanuman (The Five-Faced Hanuman)

Lord Hanuman, the embodiment of strength, devotion, and wisdom, manifests in many forms to protect the righteous and vanquish evil. Among these, Panchmukhi Hanuman is one of the most powerful and revered. “Panchmukhi” means “five-faced,” and each face represents a different aspect of divine power.
The Divine Story of Panchmukhi Hanuman — The Five-Faced Protector
Jaya Anjaneya Maha Bala, Raksha Mam Sarvatomukha
Victory to Lord Hanuman, the mighty one — protect me from every direction.
The Twilight Before the Descent
The sun had set over the golden fields of Lanka. The great war between Lord Rama and Ravana had ended, and peace seemed to return. Yet, in the silent shadows beneath the earth, a darker plot was being woven.
Deep within the mysterious realms of Patala Loka, the powerful sorcerer Ahiravana, brother of Ravana, burned with anger. He was no ordinary demon — Ahiravana was the master of illusion and black magic, a devotee of Goddess Mahamaya, and ruler of the underworld.
When he learned of Ravana’s fall, vengeance took hold of his heart. He swore to capture Lord Rama and Lakshmana — not through battle, but through deception.
The Night of the Disguise
That night, as Lord Rama and Lakshmana rested within their camp, Hanuman, ever watchful, guarded the entrance. His eyes blazed like fire, and his tail circled the gate in vigilance. None dared approach — for everyone knew, where Hanuman stood, no evil could cross.
But Ahiravana was clever. Using his sorcery, he took the form of Vibhishana, Ravana’s noble brother and Rama’s ally. With folded hands, he approached Hanuman and said softly, “Brother, I come to offer a final prayer for Ravana’s soul. Please allow me inside.
Hanuman, unable to sense deceit in that holy disguise, bowed and allowed him to pass.
Moments later, the illusionist demon entered the sacred tent, chanted dark mantras, and vanished with Rama and Lakshmana into the depths of Patala.
Hanuman’s Fury and Descent to the Underworld
When Hanuman realized what had happened, his roar shook the heavens. The air trembled as he leapt into the sky, his eyes glowing with divine rage.
Raghupati ke kaaj sake sab hoi, Ram lakhan ko lai aau soi!
(For my Lord Rama’s task, no force can stop me; I shall bring back Rama and Lakshmana!)
Guided by his faith, Hanuman dove deep into the underworld — through whirlpools of fire, past serpentine gates, into the land of Ahiravana.
The Secret of the Five Lamps
The underworld shimmered with strange light. Ahiravana sat upon a throne of serpents, surrounded by demonic guards, chanting to Goddess Kali. Rama and Lakshmana lay motionless nearby, bound by magical chains.
Hanuman charged forward and defeated countless demons with ease, but when he reached Ahiravana’s inner sanctum, he discovered the secret of his invincibility.
Ahiravana’s life was hidden in five sacred lamps, each burning in a different direction — east, west, north, south, and upward. Unless all five lamps were extinguished at the same instant, the demon could not be destroyed. Hanuman folded his hands and prayed deeply to both Lord Rama and Lord Shiva for guidance.
The Divine Revelation
As he closed his eyes in meditation, a gentle divine light enveloped him. He heard a celestial voice whisper:
Anjaneya, take the form of the Five. Only through unity of divinity can you end the darkness.
In that sacred moment, Hanuman’s body shone with a blinding radiance. From him emerged five glorious faces, each glowing with divine purpose.
The Five Divine Faces of Hanuman
East — Hanuman (the Original Face):
The symbol of courage, strength, and devotion. His gaze dispelled fear and filled the world with light.
South — Narasimha (the Man-Lion):
The destroyer of arrogance and ego; protector against all evil spirits.
West — Varaha (the Boar):
The uplifter of the Earth, representing steadfastness and divine protection.
North — Garuda (the Eagle):
The swift remover of poison, freeing the soul from all venomous attachments.
Upward — Hayagriva (the Horse-faced form):
The embodiment of wisdom and purity, representing the knowledge that conquers illusion.
The Triumph of Panchmukhi Hanuman
With all five faces radiating divine energy, Hanuman spread his mighty arms in every direction. His voice echoed through the underworld as he chanted the sacred name of Rama.
In a single divine breath, he blew upon all five lamps at once — extinguishing them in an instant. Ahiravana’s power shattered. The dark sorcery crumbled, and the demon fell lifeless to the ground.
Hanuman gently lifted Rama and Lakshmana onto his shoulders and soared back toward the light of Lanka.
The Lord’s Blessing
When they emerged from the depths, Lord Rama placed his hand upon Hanuman’s head and said with affection:
O Hanuman, none in this world can equal you in strength or devotion. You are the protector of all directions — the eternal guardian of dharma.
Tears filled Hanuman’s eyes. Bowing humbly, he said,
Prabhu, I am only your servant. Let my heart forever be your abode.
From that moment, the Panchmukhi form of Hanuman became the eternal symbol of divine protection from every direction — north, south, east, west, and above.
